Landesa has conducted research and worked with Indonesian government actors beginning in the 1980s, with our heaviest involvement during the early 2000s, when we implemented a three-year USAID grant to advise the Land Reform Directorate of BPN on laws and regulations related to land and property rights. In 2019, Landesa conducted research that culminated in a report identifying shortcomings in, and recommending adjustments to, the government’s current agrarian reform program. Our current engagement with the Vice Minister of ATR/BPN focuses on mangroves and gender issues in coastal areas in the lead up to the Wakatobi Summit and beyond.

Landesa initiates to establish an Indonesian office as a legal entity for accelerating the program of land rights and land reform for all peoples regardless of gender in Indonesia. In 2023, the Indonesian office was officially established as a foundation with the official name: Yayasan Landesa Bumi Indonesia. As our commitment, Landesa Indonesia demonstrates an effective experience in securing land tenure rights with a link to sustainable development and poverty reduction for rural and indigenous communities. In formal agreements with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Directorate of Conservation (KKP) and close work with the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN), Landesa assists the development and execution of policies and regulations that secure land and resource tenure while also emphasizing environmental protection.
